Barn Cats and Unwanted kittens
All the rescue services receive constant calls, asking for help with kittens that are 'feral' on rented or recently bought properties. Sadly, French authorities vary in their approach to this problem. Often, if you can catch them, delivery to local refuges can result in unnecessary euthanasia.
All the refuges in France are permanently overwhelmed with unwanted cats. Females can get pregnant within their first year and have as many as three litters of kittens a year, so, please, if you have cats on your property, take responsibility and
STERILISE THEM NOW.
It may be an unwanted expense, but the consequences of allowing them to breed unchecked are horrible - at best, unwanted kittens, at worst, a constantly increasing number of feral cats on your land and the accompanying spread of fatal feline diseases amongst them. Sterilising your barn cats and encouraging them to stick around by providing a little food, will keep your property free of vermin and also prevent other cats from coming onto your land. If you need help with the costs, some solution can normally be found.

Pet Passport Scheme
Animal Refuges and Rescue Organisations in France are still being asked to rehome pets for British families returning to the UK 'unexpectedly'. Most of these services are already overwhelmed by animals needing assistance. It becomes increasingly hard when newcomers add to the problem.
If you adopt pets in France, please ensure that you carry out the full Rabies Passport procedure
This involves microchip ID, rabies vaccination, blood test after one month and documentation six months after the blood test. Allow seven months to return to the UK with a pet and don't believe that it won't happen to you. Please, think about your pets. Unexpected things do happen. Make sure they are safe to travel home with you, just in case.
Pet Passports and hassles returning to the UK
Our Vets' secretary recently made a complete hash of filling out a Pets Passport for our dog to travel with us to the UK, liberally using Tipex to wipe out mistakes she had made after filling in the treatments on the wrong pages. She then entered the time and date of the tick/tapeworm treatment incorrectly, but rather than cross out the error and make a fresh entry, she simply changed the date, visibly leaving the mistaken date evident beneath! Understandably, on arriving at Calais, the port authorites were less than happy. Luckily, we were still allowed through.
However, if you are returning to the UK with your passported pet, carefully check the details entered on the passport before you leave the vets surgery after your tick/tapeworm visit. Any errors must be completely anulled and all the details written in again, on a new section, and then signed and stamped by the vet.
Also, keep your vet bill as proof of the appointment. Suspicious Customs staff will ask for it. Inability to prove that your pet has been treated at the right time for ticks and tapeworm, or that the rabies vaccination has been properly administered, may result in a delay at best, or at worst, refusal of your pet to enter the UK. Take care. Careless errors can ruin holidays.

WARNING
To all French residents with pets bearing a British microchip.
Your pet`s microchip number and your ownership details must be re-registered here in France if you wish his ID to serve any meaningful purpose.
We advise owners of pets with UK microchips to get them checked by your local french vet. Ask him to read the chip with his `lecteur` and check with the S.C.C. by minitel to see whether or not the Societe Central Canine recognise your pet's details
....... or check yourself.
Phone the SCC on 01.49.37.54.54 (expect a wait) and report that you have found a lost, microchipped cat/dog and you need to trace the owner. Quote your own pet`s British microchip number and see what they come up with!
Take care of your pet when you arrive in France.
Make sure your dog wears a visible tag clearly marked with your telephone number on a strong collar.
Do not risk losing your companion in a strange country
