Hot Gossip Archive - March 15, 2008
| Our Annual General Meeting was held on February 9th. (the day before the first daffodil opened in the treasurer`s garden! Perhaps auspicious). This was our 7th AGM, we having formed the Association in 2001 with a nucleus of about 40 supporters. |
Richard Johnson (President) reported a 2007 Membership of 614, a 15% increase on 2006, with 68% year-on-year renewal rate. Membership is concentrated in the SW of France, but otherwise spread throughout France and the UK. |

Richard went on to say how much Phoenix depends on the care and enthusiasm of our Fostercarers. There were several welcome additions to the team in 2007, bringing the total number of Fosterhomes to eight. Phoenix holds no animals in cages, all being fostered in homes with other animals while we find them a permanent family. In this way we learn how they behave socially and can give a balanced report to prospective adopters. |
In 2007, 132 otherwise condemned dogs and puppies were found new homes (90 in 2006), 48 cats and kittens (44 in 2006) and 16 horses (10). In addition, we were responsible for much indirect rehoming by putting people in touch with each other and by helping non-French speakers adopt from the local SPA. |
| Our Helpline service is busier than ever, dealing with all kinds of animal related questions from primarily the anglophone community. Many more Brits are finding themselves in difficulty and we must emphasise the need to Passport animals from the outset to avoid them being abandoned on their owners return to the UK. |
The hardwork and inspiration of the Fundraising team brought exceptional results, with the two Bookfairs, the sponsored Dogpaddle and the sponsored Walk being huge successes. With just animal feed and Vetinary costs running at around 32,000 euros per year, that`s just as well! The Blue Cross and 30 million d`Amis continued their financial support. |
In 2008, in addition to our regular work, we hope to make funds available to sterilise stray cats for individuals prepared to identify and feed them in their community. We shall also continue the work done in Primary schools to educate the children (and hopefully their families!) in animal care and responsibility. |
We wish all our Members and visitors to this website a happy 2008. Please excuse us if you sometimes find it difficult to reach us by telephone. It is frequently engaged as we deal with the many enquiries, 7 days a week and all hours of the day. |
