THE GREAT EURO BOOKSALE

On Saturday April 19th, we did it again! And set another record for the proceeds. This time, it was over 7000 euros – an extraordinary total from sales of about 5500 books, CDs, DVDs and Videos, refreshments and instant raffle at the Salle des Fetes at St. Georges de Montclar. Considering that we had had nothing but rain and gale-force winds in this part of France for days, we had almost given up hoping that we might get a fine day. But we did. The sun came out in the morning and kept shining until the last customer left the hall. Within half an hour, it was raining again!

As one can perhaps imagine, it takes weeks to sort all the books which are so generously given by our supporters, members and friends. On the day itself, we reckon that our customers brought back about 3000 books for us to re-sell, so we are already well on the way to re-stocking ready for the next Sale in November. A huge thank you to everyone – book sale customers, donors of books, wine, cakes, savouries, helpers, instant raffle prizes, lenders of vans and trailers, and especially to Christofer Rexworthy and his team who will be starting work again in August.

Please keep the books rolling in and ring Christofer on 05 53 80 73 04 or e-mail Christine Dumper on christine.dumper@gmail.com for details of drop-off places in the Dordogne and surrounding areas. Or, there is nearly always someone connected with Phoenix who can arrange to meet you at Bergerac Airport for the collection of any books or CDs you might care to donate – ring Chris or Michael Smart on 05 53 82 05 49. We even had the Junior British Canoeing team involved this time, bringing down a van-load of books from England, because some kind supporters heard of an Oxfam shop which was closing. The shop was actually going to pay for the disposal of many perfect books and our supporters stepped in, collected the whole lot for free and stored them for us. But they could not manage to bring all of the books down here in their estate car, so we contacted an old friend, Jim Rossiter, who was driving the canoes down to Spain for the team and he made a detour, via, Ware and then the Dordogne, to collect the books and bring them to us here. Where there’s a will ……!
